From Cadet to Managing Director: The C&W Cadetship Success Story of Michael Picone
February 21, 2025
At C&W Financial Services, we are proud of the career pathways we offer young professionals, and no story better embodies the success of our Cadetship Program than that of Managing Director, Michael Picone. From moving boxes of old files as a holiday worker in December 2000 to leading the firm as Managing Partner in 2019, Michael’s journey is a testament to the power of hard work, mentorship, and opportunity.
A Career Built from the Ground Up
Michael’s journey with C&W began humbly, working during the holidays to help organise old records. But in 2001, he was offered a Cadetship, allowing him to study full-time while gaining valuable hands-on experience during university holidays. This combination of academic learning and real-world exposure gave him a practical understanding of accounting from an early stage.
“The Cadetship allowed me to study full-time, complete my degree in the usual timeframe, and gain valuable experience during the holidays. This not only helped reinforce what I was learning in university but also allowed me to hit the ground running once I graduated.” – Michael Picone, Managing Director, C&W Financial Services
After graduating in 2003, Michael transitioned into a full-time role at C&W and immediately set his sights on further professional development. With the firm’s support, he pursued his Chartered Accountant (CA) qualification, completing it by December 2005.
“Having study days and mentors allowed me to complete my CA while also using the office after hours as a quiet place to focus. That level of support made a huge difference in my success.”
Developing Leadership Skills & Growing into a Management Role
By 2008, Michael had moved into a managerial position, taking on more client responsibilities and developing problem-solving skills that would be crucial in his career growth. One of the biggest advantages of the C&W Cadetship, he recalls, was the opportunity to work closely with senior partners, learning not just technical accounting skills but also how to communicate with clients and manage high-level financial strategies.
“Working alongside the partners gave me valuable insight into how to talk to clients and approach problem-solving. That experience helped me transition quickly into management responsibilities and client interactions.”
In 2011, Michael was invited to become a Partner at C&W, a pivotal career moment that solidified his role as a leader within the firm. His leadership journey continued over the years, and in 2019, he took on the role of Managing Partner, leading the firm he had once joined as a cadet.
“Being able to grow within the firm, from the very bottom to now leading the team, is both rewarding and humbling. The supportive and team-oriented partnership group at C&W has played a massive role in my success. I was never left to figure things out on my own—it was never an ‘every man for himself’ approach.”
A Culture of Support & Career Growth
Michael’s journey highlights not only his personal dedication and ambition but also the culture of mentorship and growth at C&W Financial Services. From offering flexible study arrangements to mentorship, leadership training, and even supporting a 12-month overseas break, C&W has consistently prioritised the long-term career success of its cadets.
“I was able to take a year off to travel overseas, and C&W supported me in that decision. That kind of flexibility and trust in employees speaks volumes about the firm’s culture.”
Today, as Managing Director, Michael is passionate about mentoring the next generation of accountants, ensuring that young professionals in the C&W Cadetship Program receive the same opportunities that helped shape his career.
“The C&W Cadetship is more than just a job—it’s a career launchpad. It provides young professionals with an unparalleled opportunity to develop technical skills, gain real-world experience, and be mentored by experienced accountants. If you’re serious about a career in accounting, this program will set you up for long-term success.”
